Description
I have always loved lunar calendars ever since a family friend gifted one to my dad when I was a kid. They are so beautiful and fun to look at and discover more about the moonthly cycle. However, I noticed that I never actually use the lunar calendar to make plans or schedules. I realized that the straight lunar calendar didn’t take into consideration enough aspects of the Gregorian calendar that our lives and work schedules revolve around to be as useful as they could be. In pondering this, I came up with a calendar design that, for me, remedies this problem.
As you can see in the sample calendar page, each “moonth” starts the day after new moon, waxing to first quarter, then full moon, then waning to third quarter and finally ending with the new moon. Turn the page and you start the next moonth. So that’s the primary way the calendar is structured–the basic synodic cycle of the moon.
Days of the week are such an important part of the Gregorian calendar, so in my calendar, I’ve retained this detail and color coded the weekends. The lighter boxes are Saturday and Sunday. From there, it’s quite easy to understand that the first box after a light box is Monday (marked M), the third one is Wednesday (marked W), and so forth.
Each moonth features a spectacular photograph from around the world (especially the American southwest), highlighting celestial events and other cultural phenomena. Much time and care has been put into being in the right place at the right time to capture unique observing locations at the specific times they were designed for.
We so appreciate your support in buying our calendar and hope it helps you tune into the rhythm of the moon. You are supporting our ongoing quest to document specific places at specific times to make the connection between time and space!
Calendar is 12″x18″.
All times (noting the exact time of new, full and quarter moons) are in Mountain Time.
The calendar starts before winter solstice 2024 and goes past winter solstice 2025, resulting in 13 moonths.
